Safe Messaging on Suicide (Virtual)

May 26 @ 1:00 pm 4:00 pm PDT

By OSP Northern Nevada

This is a free training on Friday, May 26 from 1p-4p over Zoom.

The Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention is inviting community partners, trainers, and advocates to participate in a Safe Messaging Workshop!

Suicide is a topic the general population feels uncomfortable discussing. This can be attributed to multiple factors including but not limited to lack of understanding, judgement, stereotypes, bias, access to education, or previous experience with suicide. However, many organizations including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAM), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) have found that the way we discuss suicide is a building block to prevention, intervention, and postvention. Many studies and research have concluded that the way we talk about suicide can have lasting impacts on someone with lived experience with suicide. The Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention is pleased to provide updated education regarding safe messaging surrounding suicide. This information can and should be implemented any time a suicide death occurs, after a suicide attempt, or for educational opportunities and with our media partners who report on suicide. It is important our communities use consistent language to frame discussing or reporting on suicide to help prevent future suicides and to destigmatize the conversations surrounding it.
