
Free Cooking Class October 19th: Dayton Nevada Community Center
Dayton, Nevada – Everyone is welcome at Healthy Communities Coalition’s monthly FREE cooking classes with dietitian Kim Mason, and farmer and Healthy Communities’ “farm to school” liaison and Community Health Advocate, Rebekah Stetson.
The next class is on Monday, October 19th at 5:30 pm at the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street. Dietitian Kim Mason, and farmer and Healthy Communities’ “farm to school” liaison, Rebekah Stetson, will be demonstrating how to make a tasty lentil salad and a wholesome apple pie.
Cooking begins at 5:30 and participants enjoy the dinner together at about 6:15.
The cooking classes are one element of a regional “healthy food hub,” an effort to increase access to & demand for affordable, locally and sustainably grown food.
Some other “spokes” of the hub include 12 school and community gardens in Lyon County, teen garden and farmers market internships, Jackrabbit Junction Buyer’s Club in Silver Springs, monthly Community Harvest Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) baskets, Farm to School strategies to increase local produce in school meals and Boys and Girls Club snacks, Community Roots nonprofit garden center, volunteer-powered food pantries in Silver Springs and Dayton, and farmers markets that accept 1)USDA Senior Coupons, 2)Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and 3)Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), in addition to cash, checks, etc.
